Jiangsu Export Growth and What Niche Products Reveal for Foreign Founders Setting Up in China
Jiangsu's first three quarters saw foreign trade rise 29.8% year on year to RMB 5.69 trillion, 11 percentage points above the national rate. This ChinaMNC briefing distills the official account of niche product exports into practical takeaways for foreign founders registering and operating companies in China.
Why Jiangsu's Trade Numbers Matter to Foreign Founders
According to Nanjing Customs statistics cited by the Jiangsu provincial government, the province's total foreign trade in the first three quarters of the year reached RMB 5.69 trillion, up 29.8% year on year. That growth rate was 11 percentage points higher than the national figure. Beyond large equipment, the official account highlights how smaller manufactured products are driving export volume. For foreign founders building a China-based entity, the details are a useful window into how local manufacturing, trade policy and customs procedures actually work on the ground.
Niche Consumer Products as an Export Engine
Hotel textiles and functional fabrics
At Jiangsu Kangnaixin Textile Technology, raw materials pass through multiple drawing and spinning steps to improve fabric quality. A company customs manager, Chen Qian, is cited describing products that are soft, skin-friendly and more wash-resistant, needing gradual replacement only after about a year and a half. The company says it can produce consistently high-quality output from yarn of the same density and has won orders from well-known hotel groups at home and abroad. Chen attributes part of that to a China–ASEAN Free Trade Area certificate of origin issued by Huai'an Customs, which cut the tariff rate on the products from 12% to zero, lowering import costs for customers and helping retain existing clients and open new markets. Export value from January to August reached RMB 180 million.
The firm also customizes for different markets: pool towels and colored towels for Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa that resist intense tropical sunlight and pool conditions without fading; and, for premium hotels, a waterproof aromatic down duvet using proprietary deodorizing technology.
Sleep-related goods
Suzhou Jili Silk, a long-established firm in Zhenze, Wujiang, developed a silk cooling weighted eye mask aimed at dark, comfortable sleep. General manager Zhu Wenchao is cited saying the mask suits fully dark sleeping environments and combines cooling, breathability, softness and pressure relief. Monthly sales have held above 100,000 units, and export value of silk eye masks in January–September more than doubled year on year. Export sales account for 65% of total sales, with products reaching 46 countries and regions.
Suzhou Opple Lighting developed sleep-aid lighting using a patented water-lily-tone light technology that extracts a pale pink light color from a broad spectrum and optimizes spectral bands to support melatonin secretion and a relaxed pre-sleep environment. Its overseas supply chain lead, Jiao Weide, is cited linking the patented technology plus origin-preference policies to continued export momentum.
Seasonal Goods and the Role of Trade Documentation
Autumn is peak delivery season for Christmas items such as ribbons and bells. At Yangzhou Anbeisi Toys, staff are producing Christmas plush toys for ASEAN markets; a China–ASEAN certificate of origin issued by Yangzhou Customs allows a 10% tariff benefit locally. Foreign trade manager Lu Chunhua says the company applied for 23 free trade agreement certificates of origin in the first three quarters, obtaining nearly RMB 300,000 in import-country tariff benefits. Yangzhou Customs supervised about RMB 1.52 billion in toy exports and issued 367 certificates of origin under various free trade agreements in the period.
Customs speed matters as much as tariff relief. At Taizhou Feiyan Crafts, general manager Dai Xingquan says customers generally demanded delivery a month earlier this year, and the company will switch to Easter lines once Christmas shipments are out. Taizhou Customs supervised RMB 1.7378 million in Christmas decorations in the first three quarters, up 96.17% year on year.
At Pengyunxin General Merchandise in Changshu, market procurement trade allows goods to be consolidated without waiting, reaching destinations in just over a month. Changshu Customs has created a combined "transit plus integrated" clearance channel, letting market procurement goods exit via 149 ports nationwide, with the fastest clearance from declaration to release taking 22 minutes.
Agri-Food Processing and Upgrading
In Baoying County, fresh lotus root from ponds goes directly to Yangzhou Tiancheng Food's processing lines. Foreign trade manager Diao Yuhong says lotus product exports exceeded RMB 28 million in the first three quarters, with orders booked into early next year. Yangzhou Customs supervised over RMB 100 million in lotus root and processed products, up about 3% year on year. The firm has moved from basic fresh-root sales toward deep processing — boiled, salted and quick-frozen products — sold to Southeast Asia, Europe and the US.
Practical Takeaways for Foreign Founders
- Use free trade agreement certificates of origin. The examples show tariff rates falling from 12% to zero and 10% benefits in partner markets, directly affecting customer costs and competitiveness.
- Build product variants for specific markets. Climate, usage conditions and consumer preferences shape design, as with pool towels for tropical markets and sleep products for different needs.
- Plan for customs efficiency. Market procurement trade and combined clearance channels can compress logistics timelines, which matters for seasonal orders.
- Consider local deep processing. Moving from raw materials to processed goods is a stated direction for exporters, relevant when choosing manufacturing partners.
